 Shiitake is a mushroom with a myriad of functions. It’s a tonic for Qi, and great option for those who get sick easily because it stimulates depressed immune function while modulating healthy immune response. It has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral properties. Additionally, shiitake protects and tones the liver, balances cholesterol levels, and modulates blood sugar.


Research also shows it as a very promising treatment for HPV, for which there is no current treatment, only a preventative vaccine. And it’s undergoing testing as a prevention and treatment of certain cancer. It’s also shown to decrease the adverse side effects caused by chemotherapy.


Nutritionally speaking, shiitake contain amino acids typically found in meat, making it a great option for vegans and vegetarians. And when you expose your mushrooms to sunlight, they become excellent sources of vitamin D.
